Preventive maintenance

Oil, batteries, belts and the 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000-mile services

Oil and lube, tune-ups, batteries, radiators, cooling systems, fuel injection and 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000-mile services.

Where a skipped service shows up first

Most of what arrives on a tow truck started as something small nobody got around to. Oil left in too long wears an engine from the inside. A battery that cranked slowly all winter picks the coldest morning to quit. A radiator or cooling system that has been losing coolant a little at a time ends with an overheated engine, and an overheated engine is how a head gasket job gets started. Fuel injection that is clogging shows up as a rough idle long before it shows up as a breakdown.

A timing belt is the quiet one. Many engines give no warning before it lets go, and on some of them a failed belt means a new engine rather than a new belt. That is why the belt is worth checking against the mileage services instead of waiting for a symptom, and why it sits on the same shop menu as oil and lube.

The maintenance menu at Total Auto Care on West Broadway is oil and lube, tune-ups, batteries, radiators, cooling systems, fuel injection, timing belts and the 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000-mile services. The ASE-certified master technicians who do it also rebuild engines and replace transmissions in the same building, on the latest diagnostic equipment, so a small service gets the same eyes as a big repair. Gas or diesel makes no difference to the front desk; one customer says they have taken their fleet and their personal vehicles there.

A mileage service is the shop going through the car against its mileage, and what that covers differs from car to car. Ask the counter at (509) 765-7863 what your odometer calls for before you book, rather than guessing from a chart. Another customer put it plainly in a Google review: “They use the best parts for the repair needed.” The shuttle service runs while the car is on the lift, and the shop texts you updates, so a morning service does not cost you the day.

After the service, the next one goes on the calendar

Repairs carry a full parts and labor warranty for 12 months and a 12,000-mile nationwide warranty, and the shop works with insurance and warranty companies if your coverage touches the job. Before you leave, ask when the next oil change and the next mileage service fall due, and put them in your phone. A service you scheduled costs less to make than a breakdown you did not.

If a maintenance visit turns up something bigger, a leaking radiator or a worn belt, the estimate is free and usually back the same day. The shop takes American Express, cash, check, Discover, MasterCard and Visa, and has several financing options when the repair is larger than the month. The shop is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

What the car tells you before it quits

None of these is an emergency yet, which is the point. If one sounds like your car, call (509) 765-7863 or send the details through the contact page. If the visit does turn up a bigger job, see how repair financing works at the counter, or read what other customers wrote.
