Tires and wheels

Tires and wheels, mounted in the building that used to be OK Tire

Michelin, BF Goodrich, Cooper and Uniroyal tires, plus wheels from Wheel One, Body Armor and Dirty Life Race Wheels, on West Broadway in Moses Lake.

Worn tread, uneven wear and a shake you can feel in the wheel

Tires tell on the rest of the vehicle. Even wear across the tread means everything is lined up. Wear on one shoulder points at the alignment. A vibration that builds with speed usually means a tire or wheel that is out of balance. Cuts and bulges in the sidewall are damage that needs a technician to look at the tire before you drive on it.

Tire work is in the walls here. Total Auto Care bought the former OK Tire building on West Broadway Ave in August, spent two months remodeling it, and opened in Moses Lake in 2022. The family-owned shop has been in business since 2005, and tires and alignment sit alongside transmissions and engines in one place.

Four tire brands and three wheel lines on one rack

The shop carries Michelin, BF Goodrich, Cooper Tires and Uniroyal, so there is a range to choose from rather than a single house brand. For wheels, it stocks Wheel One, Body Armor and Dirty Life Race Wheels, which is the shelf to look at when the factory wheel is not what you want on the vehicle.

New tires are mounted and balanced in a 20,000 square foot shop that also does alignments, brakes, transmissions and engines, so a tire problem that turns out to be a suspension problem does not send you down the road to a second shop. Call (509) 765-7863 and describe what the vehicle is doing; the estimate is free and usually the same day.

The shop works on gas and diesel vehicles, and one Google reviewer says he brings in both his fleet and his personal vehicles, so a work truck gets the same attention as a family car.

After the new set goes on

A fresh set of tires deserves a front end that is lined up to spec, which is why the shop talks about alignment alongside tires and not as an afterthought. If the old set wore unevenly, the cause has to be found, or the new ones will wear the same way. That is the reason an alignment check belongs with the purchase.

Keep the pressure right and rotate the set on a schedule, and the tires last longer and ride quieter. The 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000-mile services at Total Auto Care are a natural place to have that checked. Ask for the warranty details on the set you choose when you get your estimate, and ask about financing if you are replacing all four at once.

Reading a tire before it fails

Moses Lake WATIRES
  1. Tread worn low

The pattern is shallow across the whole tire, and wet pavement starts to feel different.

  2. Wear on one edge

The inside or outside shoulder is going while the middle looks fine. That points at alignment.

  3. A vibration in the wheel

A shake that builds with speed is the classic sign of a tire or wheel out of balance.

  4. A bulge or a cut in the sidewall

Damage on the side of the tire is worth a look from a technician before the next drive.

Wear on one edge is a job for the front end and alignment bay, and the financing page lists the options if a full set is more than you planned to spend this month.
